The Origin of The Term 'GOBO'
Some say it's a condensed form of 'go-between,' symbolizing its placement between the lamp and lens of a projecting lantern. Alternatively, it's suggested to stand for 'Graphic Optical Black Out,' a nod to its shadow-creating capabilities in early TV lighting and Gobo Design. In the U.S.A., they were even known as 'Flags' or Custom Metal Stencils. And who knew? Gobo is not just a lighting marvel but also the lead character from Fraggle Rock and a vegetable root also known as Burdock.
